The year was 1929. The stock market had crashed, and America was in the grip of the Great Depression. But one man, determined to beat the odds, started a business despite the economic turmoil.
Earl Fahrney opened Fahrney's Pens, a fountain pen repair shop in Washington, D.C. His dedication to craftsmanship and customer service allowed the business to thrive. Over time, he began expanding into selling new writing instruments, including the "revolutionary" ballpoint pen.
As Fahrney’s repair business gained recognition and a loyal following, the foundation was laid for expansion. The success of the early years allowed Mr. Fahrney to dream bigger, setting the stage for a move to a prominent location in the heart of Washington, DC.
In 1950, Mr. Fahrney relocated the store to the historic Willard Hotel on F Street, adding the store’s iconic tagline: “The Write Place”, which remains our motto today. For the next 21 years, the Willard Hotel served as Fahrney’s home.
When Mr. Fahrney retired in 1971, he moved the store to New York Avenue. Ownership was then passed to Jon and Corinne Sullivan in 1972, and eventually to their son, Chris Sullivan, who maintained the passion for pens and personalized service that has defined Fahrney’s for nearly 100 years.
Throughout our history, Fahrney’s Pens has supplied fine writing instruments to some of the world’s most prominent figures, from presidents to dignitaries. Our dedication to quality, expertise, and service has made us a trusted destination for anyone who appreciates the art of writing.
In 2025, Fahrney’s Pens entered an exciting new chapter when Writeside Holdings, LLC acquired the business as part of its brand portfolio.
Writeside Holdings brought a renewed vision for Fahrney’s while maintaining its legacy of quality, expertise, and exceptional customer service. The team at Writeside, led by passionate writing enthusiasts and avid pen collectors, has proudly taken on the stewardship of Fahrney’s, continuing its near-century-long legacy of celebrating the joy of writing.
