Exceptional Expressions of Japanese Artistry & Tradition: Namiki Aya Collection

In search of a legacy fountain pen renowned for its intricate designs and craftsmanship? Look no further than the Namiki Aya, an exceptional work of art to treasure for generations. Learn more about this incomparable fine writing instrument below or watch our president, Drew Brown’s in-depth video.

Founded in 1925, Pilot’s Namiki collection represents the art of Japanese pen-making at its finest. Each Namiki pen is an elegant fusion of traditional artistry and modern performance, renowned for intricate maki-e designs and exceptional craftsmanship. While the Aya is a Namiki model that has stood the test of time, there are many reasons why this remarkable fine writing instrument should be included in every modern collector’s fountain pen repertoire.

Beautiful Gold Nib

The heart of the Aya is Namiki’s No. 30 18-karat gold nib, delivering a smooth, responsive writing experience as expected with Pilot nibs. This elegant gold nib features a lovely icon of Mount Fuji and rhodium trim, providing a beautiful two-tone effect.

Handcrafted, Elegant Artistry

Namiki Aya fountain pens celebrate the artistry and precision of traditional Japanese lacquerwork, inspired by the energy and elegance of nature. Made in Japan at the Pilot headquarters, Aya fountain pens feature handcrafted design work by the renowned Kokkokai artisan group, a guild of artisans specially trained in urushi lacquer and maki-e techniques.

These highly skilled techniques require years of training and also result in a time-consuming intensive process in creating the detailed designs for each pen. The designs of the Aya fountain pens have an elevated elegance yet appear more understated in comparison to other Namiki pens.

Maki-e is the use of lacquer to create designs and patterns within the layers of urushi lacquer, which have to be cured over time. The use of multiple cured layers also ensures an extremely durable final product.

Substantial Size, Comfortable Weight

The overall large size of the Aya falls in between nibs in the Pilot Emperor and the Yukari Royale. Though it is a larger fountain pen, its weight is deceptively light. It features a large grip section, making it comfortable to write with for long periods of time.

Convenient Cartridge Converter Filling

Filling an Aya fountain pen is easy and convenient as it can take an ink cartridge or can be filled using the larger capacity Pilot Con-70 cartridge converter.

Distinctive Details, Inspired by Nature

The Namiki Aya collection is offered in four distinctive finishes expressing Japanese craftsmanship through spectacular use of urushi lacquer and traditional Togidashi Maki-e artistry. Each of these exceptional writing instruments shares a distinctive story inspired by the beauty and energy of nature.

Learn about the inspiration behind each model and find the one that speaks to you:

Namiki Aya Akatsuki (Daybreak): Inspired by the quiet moments before sunrise, Akatsuki (daybreak), captures the warmth and anticipation of first light. A beautifully understated, jagged pattern of gold flakes flow over layers of rich red and black urushi lacquer. The details evoke a bright sunburst, reflecting heat and light, and a unique intensity.

Namiki Aya Hayate (Gale): The Hayate (gale) style captures the powerful movement of wind. Dark gray swirls spiral around the pen cap and the barrel with silver flake details flowing over a deep black urushi lacquer. This elegant design clearly reflects the energy and beauty of a brilliant, swift wind.

Namiki Aya Seiryu (Limpid Stream): Evoking the tranquility and gentle movement of clear water, Seiryu (limpid stream) features waves of rich blue urushi lacquer against a luminous deep black layer, all adorned with silver flakes and finely crushed abalone shell. These shimmering details evoke the purity and peaceful movement of a flowing stream.

Namiki Aya Tokiwa (Evergreen): Tokiwa (evergreen) celebrates the enduring landscape and elegance of evergreen trees. This design features gentle variations of rich green urushi lacquer layers accented with luminous gold and crushed abalone shell shimmer, reminiscent of stars scattered across the night sky. This fountain pen wraps up the collection in a full-circle moment, as the urushi lacquer used in these Aya pens comes from urushi trees, similarly reflected in this pen design’s inspiration of everlasting tree and mountain landscapes.

Understated Elegance, Boundless Inspiration

Why would a pen enthusiast or collector consider adding a Namiki Aya to their repertoire?

Fahrney’s President Drew was excited to re-examine the Aya and was pleasantly surprised with how interesting and approachable this fountain pen is.

Like all of Namiki’s extraordinary fountain pens, the Aya has a distinct story to tell through its unique maki-e art and craftsmanship. Yet compared to Pilot’s more vibrant or opulent pens like the Custom Urushi or the Emperor, the Aya is much more understated in its elegance.

“The Aya casts a wider net. You get to assign your own meaning to it.”

The Aya allows for more creativity and connection in that the stories it tells and the meaning it represents are truly in the hands of the beholder. It is the perfect fine writing instrument that bridges the gap — featuring the renowned performance and quality expected of a Namiki pen and distinctive aesthetics to transform and treasure your writing experience for years, maybe even centuries to come.

“No matter how you form a connection with a pen, the Aya gives you enough inspiration to dive in and explore mentally and emotionally.”
